Michael Bublé says son's cancer left him 'unstable' and forced him to lose 'alter ego'

Michael Bublé says that his son's cancer diagnosis has forced him to "lose his alter ego" and concentrate on the things that "really matter".

The Canadian singer's life was turned upside down after his son, Noah, was diagnosed with hepatoblastoma, a rare type of liver cancer.

Noah, who is now nine, was just three years old when he was first diagnosed.

Thankfully, the youngster was given the all-clear the following year, but his battle changed the family forever.

Speaking to Red magazine about how his son’s diagnosis affected him, Michael said: “That, of course, changed me in a big way – it changed what mattered to me, it changed how I saw life.

“For most of my life as an entertainer and, especially on stage, I’d become my alter ego.

“Then my wife and I went through this unthinkable thing, and I lost that alter ego.”

Speaking to The Mirror on Sunday, Michael admitted that he was left feeling so "unstable and vulnerable" after the diagnosis.

"I've been through a lot, obviously. When I made the last record [in 2018], my son had just been in remission and I wasn’t ready to come back.

"I didn’t know that at the time but, mentally, I was so unstable and vulnerable. I made a safe record with producers I liked and I just tried to protect myself and hold on to a career.

"But I feel really good now and I was raring to go — like this great weight had been lifted off me. My son was healthy, my kids and my wife were good, life is good. Why wouldn’t I just explode wanting to make an incredible record?"

The singer has been married to his wife, actress and composer Luisana Lopilato, since 2011.

The pair are also parents to Elias, 7, Vida, 4 and Cielo, who was born in 2022.

He explained that he and Luisana understand that "each other's fulfilment is important".

The 47-year-old explained how he won't be touring for certain months as she will be filming a movie.

He added that he would be "Daddy on set", before saying that she will do the same for him when it's his turn to tour.

Michael, who is loved all year around but especially at Christmas, said that he and his wife don't care what they do - as long as they do it together.

After Noah recovered from cancer in 2017, Michael wrote a song – called Forever Now – about his children.

Despite previously admitting he did not know if he would ever make music again after his son’s cancer diagnosis, Michael expressed his excitement at being back at work and preparing to embark on his upcoming UK arena tour in March.

He called it the "best show he's ever done" and said that he gets a certain kick out of performing live in front of thousands of people.

Michael said that his aim is to "unify people" and "lift them up" with his music, which he said is important for the times we are living in.
