Micah Richards reveals Vincent Kompany role in Man City fines system

Vincent Kompany was the headmaster of fines that the rest of the Manchester City squad tried to avoid, according to Micah Richards.

Chelsea made headlines recently after a list of financial punishments introduced by Frank Lampard leaked, from £500 per minute for being late for team meetings to £20,000 for being late for training.

Richards, the last City academy graduate to become a regular first-team player and one of the key figures in their first Premier League title win in 2012, saw similarities between the Chelsea rap sheet and the one in place at the Etihad when he was there and went onto explain how Kompany kept everyone in order.

"You know Kompany, he's busy he just looks like that person anyway and he always kept track of the fines and because I was vice-captain and one of the leaders in the dressing room he'd tell me to take charge," he told BBC 5 Live .

"But I'm not going to tell the manager a player was late or didn't put his bib in the wash so it was only if Kompany caught you, so the lads were avoiding him.

"He was like a schoolteacher, headmaster, one of those guys who when you see him you just turned the other way. I tried to be friends with everyone."

Pep Guardiola introduced a fines system in City's third season as a way of maintaining discipline as they looked to retain the Premier League, before removing them when he was convinced they had had the desired effect.
