Mets Great Darryl Strawberry Recovering From Heart Attack

Eight-time MLB All-Star and New York Mets great Darryl Strawberry announced he is recovering from a heart attack in an Instagram post Monday night.

"Praising God for His amazing grace and loving mercy in saving my life this evening from a heart attack. I am so happy and honored to report that all is well. So thankful for the medical team and staff at St. Joseph West in Lake St. Louis for responding so quickly and bringing me through a stent-procedure that has brought my heart to total restoration!!! Your prayers are so absolutely appreciated as I continue to recover, in Jesus Name," Strawberry wrote

Strawberry said his heart is in “total restoration” after a stent procedure at St. Joseph Hospital West in Lake St. Louis, Mo.

Strawberry, who turned 62 Tuesday, spent 17 seasons in the big leagues with the Mets, Los Angeles DodgersSan Francisco Giants and New York Yankees.

The Los Angeles native earned the NL Rookie of the Year award in 1983 and won a World Series with the Mets in ’86. He also won three World Series rings with the Yankees (1996, ’98 and ’99), although he didn’t play in the ’98 postseason.

Strawberry, who belted 335 career home runs, was suspended three times by MLB for substance abuse. He won a fight with colon cancer after being diagnosed in 1998. 

Strawberry is set to have his No. 18 Mets jersey retired at Citi Field on June 1.
