On any given week, sports broadcasters can go viral for delivering a lively call that captivates viewers worldwide. But, in the case of Mets announcer Gary Cohen, a soundbite during Friday’s 14–7 blowout loss to the Pirates made waves online for reasons that had nothing to do with the action.
Cohen, SNY’s Mets play-by-man since 2005, voiced his complete displeasure in the team’s latest poor outing in the midst of a rout at PNC Park. As New York, losers of six straight games entering Friday, trailed Pittsburgh 14–2 in the bottom of the eighth inning, Cohen delivered possibly the saddest line of the MLB season as relief pitcher Tommy Hunter looked to log the first out of the inning.
“Well I don’t know what rock bottom feels like, but this seems like it’s awfully close,” Cohen said before Hunter tossed his third strike to end the at-bat.
As if the moment couldn’t get any worse, Cohen followed the out by emphasizing New York’s run disparity to start its road trip, which has included 40 allowed runs in just four games. From Tuesday to Thursday, the Mets (30–34) faced the Braves in a series at Truist Park, a stand that saw the club go 0–3 while getting outscored 26–19.

Needless to say, Cohen, like many Mets supporters, clearly feels dejected by New York’s struggles this campaign.
Currently situated in fourth place in the NL East, the Mets, who have gone 15–21 since May 1, will now look to snap their skid and start adding more Ws to the standings when they continue their series against the Pirates on Saturday.
