Metros suspended between Airport and South Gosforth until Tuesday after lightning strike damage

Metros are suspended until Tuesday afternoon on one part of the line after a lightning strike caused major damage.

Trains are unable to run between Airport and South Gosforth until at least noon tomorrow following the thunderstorm.

One thousand metres of power line has been damaged by the severe weather, a Nexus spokesman said.

Replacement buses will be running in the affected area until trains are on the move again.

A spokesman for Nexus said: "Metro services are to remain suspended between Airport and South Gosforth for the rest of the evening.

“This is due to extensive damage to overhead lines from what seems to be a suspected lightning strike.

“One thousand metres of power line has been damaged and repair work will get underway from 8pm this evening.

“Engineers estimate the work is likely to be complete by noon on Tuesday, so anyone travelling in the morning through that affected area will need to use a replacement bus, service 900.

“We’re sorry for the inconvenience caused. Keep an eye on our twitter account @My_Metro for updates.”
