Metrolink rush-hour tram delays as Manchester city centre line blocked following police incident

Metrolink services from the city centre have been cancelled this afternoon following a police incident in New Islington. Police first cordoned off an area on Merrill Street at around 12.45pm on Friday (June 17).

The cordon remained in place throughout the afternoon, with an air ambulance also seen landing nearby. Police confirmed an injured male was rushed to hospital following the incident, but more details are not known at this time.

Transport for Greater Manchester announced the delays at around 3pm on Friday afternoon. They tweeted: "Due to a Police incident, there are no services between Piccadilly & Clayton Hall. Services are operating Ashton-under-Lyne to Clayton Hall, and Eccles to Piccadilly.

"Tickets and passes are being accepted on the 216 & 217 bus service." Transport for Greater Manchester have been contacted for more information. Updates can be found on their website, with passengers encouraged to get off and walk the distance between stops.

Manchester City Council also urged drivers to avoid the area. At around 5pm, a GMP Spokesperson said: "At around 12.45pm on Friday 17 June 2022, we received a report of an injured male on Merrill Street in the Holt Town area of Manchester City Centre. Emergency services remain in attendance.

"Anyone with information should contact police via gmp.police.uk or 101 quoting 1566 17/06/22. Information can also be shared anonymously via the independent charity – Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
