The region was battered by the strong winds of Storm Otto from the early hours. The Met Office has issued a yellow warming with up to 75mph gales across the North East.
The railways were severely disrupted across the region with many services delayed or cancelled. Roads were blocked and people are being warned that injuries and a danger to life from flying debris is possible.
However, despite forecasts indicating that the winds will ease off as the day goes on, it’s not all good news for the weekend. The Met Office forecast is predicting that this weekend is going to be a wet one.
The yellow warning for very strong winds is in force across the North East and Scotland until this afternoon. The Met Office says that residents should also be aware of bridge and road closures and the possibility of power cuts.
Heading into the weekend, according to the Met Office’s forecast, we can expect the weather to turn cloudy with some outbreaks of heavy rain. Thankfully, temperatures will remain mild and the wind will ease off as the evening goes on.
The weekend will bring light rain in the morning before gradually getting heavier as the day goes on into the afternoon. Expect temperatures below 10C with breezy winds.
Looking ahead, the experts suggest that Sunday through to Tuesday will feature cloud, patchy rain and sunny spells. Out of the weekend, temperatures look set to drop again with a new band of rain moving in to start the week.
