Met Office warns of freezing temperatures ahead after mercury dipped to -8 degrees

The Met Office warns of icy conditions as temperatures look set to drop below zero over the next week.

Yesterday saw temperatures in some parts of West Somerset drop to -8 as the cold weather continues to grip the region.

The forecast shows a cold blast is coming for areas of the UK over the next few days with predictions for South West being as low as minus one.

Across the north of England and Scotland, the charts show temperatures will average -1 across the majority of the UK with temperatures peaking at 2C across the South East on March 19.

The latest weather charts show most of the country will see the mercury dip below freezing overnight and into the weekend.

Most of the country isn't expected to see temperatures go above freezing, apart from in London where 2C is forecast.

The cold temperatures look set to continue through the weekend, with a similar weather chart showing chilly conditions at 6am on Sunday.

Forecast for the South West this week

This is what the Met Office is predicting for the region this week:

Headline:

Dry conditions to continue but turning unsettled midweek.

Today:

A chilly start with frost likely across many parts, but fine and dry throughout the day. Turning a little cloudier into the afternoon, so the best of the sunshine will be in the morning. Maximum temperature 8 °C.

Tonight:

Remaining dry throughout the evening and night. Cloud will come and go to give some clear spells at times. Further frost will develop under any clear skies. Minimum temperature -1 °C.

Monday:

Feeling cold during the morning with a risk of frost. Staying dry throughout the day. Cloudier than of late so sunshine more limited. Maximum temperature 9 °C.

Outlook for Tuesday to Thursday:

Patchy light rain briefly on Tuesday and winds increasing overnight. Potentially heavy rain and strong winds on Wednesday, with coastal gales. Blustery heavy showers on Thursday with possible hail.

Long range forecast (March 11-20)

Remaining unsettled for most on Thursday with frequent blustery showers, winds could reach severe gale around some coasts with gales also possible inland.

The unsettled theme is then likely to remain through the following weekend with further spells of rain and showers, with some snow possible on high ground in northern parts of the country. Into the following week, there may be a more settled, drier and brighter interlude for at least southern areas. T

hereafter conditions look mixed or changeable with further potential for rain and strong winds, with these most likely across the west and northwest of the UK. Temperatures are expected to trend close to average with overnight frosts still possible, especially during settled interludes.
