Met Office issues snow forecast update for Scotland as White Christmas to hit

The chances of a 'White Christmas' is on the minds of many Scots with just five sleeps to go until the big day.

For those dreaming of a white Christmas - there is good news.

If snow does fall in the lead up to Christmas, it's most likely to happen in Scotland, northern England and the midlands, according to the Met Office.

Met Office meteorologist Annie, Shuttleworth said: "We could see some snow showers over the hills in northern parts of the UK - it's probably the most likely place to see any snow.

"You couldn't rule out some sleety snow further south than that, but there's a really big question mark on it."

In Scotland, the weather during the start of the week will be settled and calm.

Today and tomorrow will see frosty winter mornings with highs reaching 3C to 6C.

Monday will see lots of cloud in Scotland with the best sunshine in the north and northwest, said BBC Scotland Weather.

Tuesday will also be dry, cloudy and chilly except patchy rain in the far north. Highs will range from 3C to 5C with exception to Stornaway which will be a tad warmer at 8C.

Will there be a white Christmas in Scotland?

Then towards the end of the week nearing Christmas, the Met Office said Scotland and the north of England will see colder and brighter weather.

Shuttleworth said: "It's that boundary between the cold and the warm air which is where the uncertainty is, and that's where the greatest risk of seeing any snow or sleet is.

"We're expecting to see some snow in the lead-up to Christmas, but it is likely to be over high ground and if anything did fall at lower levels, we anticipate that to largely be quite sleety and to not last very long."

So if there is going to be snowfall in the UK near Christmas, it is most likely to happen in Scotland, northern England and the midlands, according to the Met Office.

The days between Christmas and New Year will be settled, dry, calm and cold.

Bookmakers have their top bets on Edinburgh as the most likely place to see snow on Christmas.

UK five day forecast

Monday

Cloudy again for many, though cloud may begin to break during the day with some sunshine as slightly cooler conditions spread in from the east. Breezy in far southwest.

Monday night

Rather cloudy with some clear periods developing over England and Wales leading to a cold night with widespread frost and a few fog patches.

Tuesday

Rather cloudy, but a better chance of seeing bigger breaks and some sunshine across central and southern Britain than previous days. Some drizzle possible at times in far north/northwest.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday

A more unsettled period with rain, stronger winds, hill snow in the north, and possibly snow to lower levels later, mixed with brief settled spells. Mild south, colder in north.
