Met Office issues weather warning update as looming storm expected to bring 10 hours of heavy rain

Heavy rain will affect more of the South West than first thought this weekend, according to forecasters.

The Met Office has issued an update to its yellow weather warning applying to parts of the UK until Tuesday.

Although Bristol remains outside the ambit of the warning, the nearby Mendips are now affected until 5pm tomorrow (Sunday), such that the at-risk region stretches from Weston to beyond Plymouth.

Bristol is currently forecast for heavy rain from 5pm tonight (Saturday) until 3am on Sunday followed by further rain until 2pm.

In a further tweak to the warning, the likelihood of heavy rain - prompting the risk of some flooding and traffic problems - has been raised to 'high'.

Bus and train services are likely to be affected, with travel taking longer, while some interruption to power supplies could occur too.

The Met Office said: "An area of persistent, heavy rain will arrive from the southwest by Saturday evening before moving east overnight and through Sunday.

"The rain should clear from the southwest on Sunday morning but will persist over parts of north Wales and northern England through much of Sunday. Through the period many parts of this area will see 20 to 30 mm of rain.

"Where the heaviest rain will fall remains uncertain but there is the potential for 30 to 40 mm of rain to fall within a few hours in places as well as 60-70 mm over the higher ground of Dartmoor, Wales and the Peak District.

"The rain will be accompanied by strong winds with 35-40 mph gusts likely quite widely, and to 50 mph over coasts and hill tops in southwest England and Wales."
