Met Office issues new warning for thunderstorms and torrential rain for large part of Wales

The Met Office has issued a new thunderstorm warning for a large part of Wales.

The yellow warning is in place from 9am on Tuesday, July 27, until 6am on Wednesday, and warns that between 20 and 30mm of rain could fall in an hour. The Met Office had already issued a crushing update on a second heatwave, which you can read here.

Forecaster Derek Brockway said the week will be "more unsettled, cooler and breezier with rain and showers thanks to low pressure. Some heavy and thundery showers with sunshine in between. A changeable and mixed start to August."

The Met Office warning states that heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop during Tuesday across much of Wales, northern and central England.

It says: "These will last well into the night across north Wales and north-west England in particular where they could be prolonged in places. 20 to 30 mm of rain is possible in around one or two hours, and a few places could see around 60 mm in 3 to 6 hours. Lightning and hail may pose additional hazards in a few locations."
