Met Office forecasting a 'brief burst of summer' this weekend with highs of 28C

The bank holiday weather has been dull and damp for many - but it is looking brighter for the weekend as temperatures are forecast of rise.

After a mixed week of sunshine, showers and below average temperatures, the weekend could see what has been described as a "brief burst of summer".

Highs of 28C would make it hotter than Ibiza and the south of France this weekend.

BBC Breakfast forecaster Carol Kirkwood said that "amber winds" from the west will bring warmer weather towards the end of the week.

She said: "By Saturday it looks temperatures will start to recover with 18C to 22C widely, up to 26C in the south-east. If it is too cool for you at the moment, it is not going to last too long."

It is still uncertain how widespread the warmth will be and how long it will last, but Wales should see some of the best of the weather.

A Met Office forecaster said: "Next weekend, pressure is expected to build across southern areas of the UK, allowing it to become warmer than of late generally, and locally very warm inland in the southeast.

"Any rain becoming confined to northwestern areas and more in the way of dry weather establishing itself. For many parts into the following week, we should then see a fair amount of dry weather with some sunshine and the potential for warm or perhaps very warm conditions at times."

It is good news after a mixed week on the weather front, but an upturn should start on Friday afternoon.

The Met Office outlook for Wednesday to Friday forecasts: "A chilly start on Wednesday, but quickly turning cloudy, breezy and wet.

"Cloudy and humid Thursday with some drizzle. Cloudy and damp at first Friday, but brighter and warmer later."

Bookmakers have seen a flurry of bets on June being a record-breaker.

John Hill from bookmakers Coral said: "The early outlook for June is positive and that has prompted a flurry of bets for a record hot month in the UK."
