Most bizarre and eye-catching Met Gala looks of all time ahead of 2023 event

A host of celebrities will be out in force for this year's Met Gala, with fans likely to be eagerly-awaiting the unconventional and dramatic outfits that are showcased tonight.

The annual event is considered 'the biggest night in fashion' and is hosted by Anna Wintour - who's served as the editor-in-chief of Vogue magazine for more than three decades.

The occasion - held each year at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City - is an opportunity for guests to showcase unique fashion choices, particularly on the red carpet.

There have been a number of bizarre outfits worn by celebrities at the Met Gala in recent years. We've taken a look back at just some examples ahead of this year's event.

The singer arrived at the event wearing a chandelier-inspired outfit, which reportedly weighed 40 pounds. Katy's dramatic ensemble featured plenty of sparkle and glamour.

She later underwent an outfit change once she was inside the museum itself, where she dressed up as a cheeseburger. She wore a lettuce-like dress underneath a costume.

The word "OFF" was emblazoned across her chest which formed part of the mesh dress and it turned out the outfit was a tribute to Off-White founder and Louis Vuitton director Virgil Abloh, who passed away in November 2021.

Posting a tribute to him on Instagram, Kylie wrote: "Virgil and I were supposed to go to the Met together before it got postponed in 2020. To celebrate V tonight and his incredible legacy truly means the world to me.

"I'm humbled to wear this dress and honor my talented beautiful friend. We felt you tonight Virgil and love you forever."

The actor and singer graced the red carpet wearing a bedazzled scarlet gown by the fashion brand but it was the accessory that accompanied it that prompted attention.

He had opted to hold a replica of his own head whilst posing for photos at the annual event four years ago and he was also spotted with the prop at an after-party.
