Met Eireann's thunderstorm update as parts of Ireland flood after 60mm of rain

Met Eireann have given another thunderstorm update after parts of the country flooded with up to 60mm of rain falling in places.

The heatwave which saw Ireland's temperatures hit as high as 30C finally broke on Monday morning, as rain clouds swept across the island.

But those rain showers turned dangerous in parts, particularly in the south-east of the country.

Videos posted on social media showed the likes of Carlow town and New Ross in Wexford turned into 'swimming pools' with water pouring down their main streets and cars floating along.

But it does appear that we're through the worst of things.

Monday night will be "dry for most with clear spells and a few well scattered showers, with lowest temperatures of 10 to 14 degrees" the national forecaster say.

Tuesday will be better too, with the day starting "rather cloudy in the north and east with the best of the sunny spells in the west and southwest. Rain showers will become more isolated through the day. Highest temperatures of 15 to 19 degrees"

Weather expert Alan O'Reilly of Carlow Weather added: "Back the long trousers tomorrow with temperatures struggling to get above 17c in many areas. Breezy too with some gusty conditions."

Speaking about Monday's rain, he wrote: "The top reading from official station is 66mm at Mallow in Cork, my station up to 45mm now at Tullow."

Things are set to stay humid though, as after a sunny day on Wednesday, Thursday will see temperatures come back up to 22C, albeit with a few rain showers to go with it.
