Met Eireann pinpoints when good weather will return after freezing conditions hit one part of Ireland

Met Eireann is forecasting the return of "pleasant" weather in the next few days after bitterly cold conditions arrived in Ireland this week.

The country definitely felt the chill recently after the mercury dipped below zero in many areas.

While Thursday night is set to be baltic again, the good news is that milder weather is on the way.

The national forecaster has also indicated when we can expect the positive changes to arrive, with Sunday pinpointed as the best day of the week.

On Thursday night, patchy outbreaks of drizzle will feed into the west and northwest tonight, while it will stay mostly dry elsewhere with perhaps a touch of frost where skies clear.

There will be some mist and fog patches too, with lowest temperatures of 1 to 6C and coldest in the midlands.

It will be mostly dry on Friday, but also cloudy with patchy drizzle, mainly affecting the west and northwest.

There will be some brighter spells too, with the best of these across Leinster and Munster.

It will feel a little less cold with highest temperatures of 10 to 12C.

A forecaster continued: "Friday night will be milder than previous nights. It will be mostly cloudy and mainly dry.

"There will be patchy light rain and drizzle at times in the west, becoming more persistent in the northwest by morning. Lowest of 4 to 8C.

"Windy on Saturday with a band of rain extending across the country from the northwest becoming patchier as it does so.

"Parts of the southeast will stay dry till evening. Drier clearer conditions and a few showers will follow from the northwest through the late afternoon and evening. Mild too with highs of 12 to 14C.

"Saturday night will be mainly dry with a fair amount of cloud and some patchy mist or drizzle. Lowest temperatures of 4 to 8C, coolest in the south."

The forecaster added: "In contrast Sunday will be mainly dry with some pleasant sunny spells and just the chance of a stray coastal shower. Turning a little fresher again too with highs of 10 to 12C in mostly moderate northwesterly winds.

"Monday will be mild and mostly cloudy with some patchy light rain or drizzle. Highest temperatures of 12 to 14C. On Monday night, rain will develop in the west and will spread eastwards across the country, clearing early on Tuesday.

"While there is some uncertainty regarding Tuesday, it will likely be cloudy with outbreaks of rain, some turning heavy at times and it may get blustery for a time. Remaining mild with highest temperatures similar to Monday 12 to 14C."
