Met Eireann pinpoint when cold snap will return after 'settled' spell of weather with one area warned

Ireland will have a spell of settled weather over the next couple of days - but a cold snap will return later this week as temperatures will once again drop below freezing.

2022 has started on the 'nippy' side, and Met Eireann have warned those in the north west of the country to expect that to continue in the next few days.

The freezing air should go nationwide by the time Wednesday rolls around but there is good news to follow it.

Here's the latest from the Met Eireann boffins.

Monday will be "mild, damp and cloudy", with the forecast predicting "patchy" rain and drizzle.

"However, there will be good dry periods too. Highest temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees in mostly moderate southwesterly winds, veering westerly later. Later in the afternoon, cooler and clearer conditions will develop in the west and northwest." Met Eireann say.

It's a similar story on Tuesday, which is set to be largely dry.

"There will be long spells of sunshine and just a little patchy drizzle along southern coasts and isolated light showers in the northwest. Highest temperatures of 6 to 9 degrees in light southwesterly winds, fresher near to the northwest coast." say the national forecasters

But things get cold on Tuesday night, a dry night with long clear spells.

What that means, according to Met Eireann will be that temperatures fall to between -1 and +3 degrees with frost developing in places in mostly light winds.

"Some mist and fog patches forming also," they warn.
