Met Eireann issues four-day snow alert as Siberian winds to bring heavy falls to Ireland

Met Eireann has issued a four-day weather advisory with snow and freezing temperatures to engulf Ireland next week.

The national forecaster's advisory will begin at 6am on Sunday morning and will be in effect until 6pm on Wednesday.

Forecasters are warning that temperatures will dip to freezing even during the day time, with significant snowfall possible at all times.

The alert reads: "Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday will be very cold with temperatures in low single figures by day and with sharp or severe frosts and icy patches at night.

"Showers of sleet or snow at times in eastern counties from Sunday evening onwards.

"Hazardous conditions on roads and paths."

The bitterly cold weather is a result of northerly winds and has the potential to bring lasting snowfall.

Met Eireann's Liz Walsh added: "Our weather is expected to turn progressively colder from early on Sunday 7th February, with the cold spell now looking likely to last well into next week.

"The origin of the cold air over Scandinavia will bring a northeasterly or easterly component to the wind-flow over Ireland.

"That wind will be especially noticeable on Sunday and Monday with gusty east to northeast winds likely to produce a significant wind-chill factor."
