Met Eireann issues flood warning to these 12 counties as stormy weather to blast Ireland today

Break out the brollies – it's going to be a wet one.

Met Eireann has warned that Ireland is set for bouts of "thundery" rainfall today, with a status yellow rainfall warning in place for a whopping 12 counties today.

The national forecaster says there's a risk of spot flooding in Galway, Mayo, Leitrim, Sligo, Roscommon, Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal, Longford, Louth, Westmeath and Meath.

Rainfall will blast the dozen counties this afternoon and evening, with the warning in place until 6am tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the rest of the country will also see some heavy precipitation, ahead of a "wet and breezy" night across the country.

Today, a band of rain will move into the southwest before spreading across the country over the course of the afternoon and evening.

Afternoon temperatures, according to Met Eireann, will range from 6 degrees in the north to 11 degrees in the south of the country.

Tonight will see "widespread heavy rain", which Met Eireann says could become stormy at times amid "thundery" showers.

Today's forecast adds: "The rain will gradually move northeastwards overnight with showers following in the southwest.

"A mild night in most places with lowest temperatures of 8 to 11 degrees, but staying colder in Ulster with lows of 4 to 7 degrees.

"Winds will be moderate to fresh, easterly in Ulster and southwesterly elsewhere, with strong winds near most coasts."

The rest of the week will bring more rain and showers, with Ulster in particular set for "persistent and heavy" droplets.

Friday will be generally cloudy, with mild temperatures that range from 8 to 11 degrees throughout most of the country.

Meanwhile, Saturday will bring colder conditions, with temperatures dropping as low as 4 degrees during the day amid dry but perishing weather.

And Saturday night will see the needle drop below zero once again, with temperatures plunging to a low of minus 1.
