Met Eireann issue new immediate warning for five counties as miserable conditions hit

Met Eireann have extended an immediate thunderstorm warning as five counties are now being placed on alert.

The Status Yellow warning is in place for Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Cork and Waterford from now until 6pm on Monday.

It reads: "Scattered thunderstorms this afternoon and early evening, bringing some heavy downpours with the risk of spot flooding and hail."

And in the coming days we can expect more showers, as the awful conditions are here to stay.

In terms of the rest of this week, here's what we're looking at on the weather front:

Monday night

Most areas will be dry tonight with long and clear spells. However, scattered showers will mainly fall in Munster overnight.

Scattered showers will continue in the south and southwest, but the rest of Ireland will see dry and sunny spells. Further showers will develop through the afternoon, heaviest in Munster and Leinster with the risk of isolated thunderstorms.

The western counties will be mainly dry in the afternoon.

Tuesday night

A mix of dry and clear spells with isolated showers. The rainfall and drizzle will move into the west and northwest overnight.

Wednesday morning

There will be patches of rain and drizzle over the northern half of the country for much of the day. Further south, scattered showers are expected but it's expected to be largely dry during the afternoon with sunny spells developing.

Wednesday night

A relatively mild night with rain moving from the southwest to most areas as winds strengthen, becoming stronger in coastal areas.

Thursday and Friday

At the moment, Met Eireann has said: "there's a degree of uncertainty surrounding the forecast towards the end of the week with an area of low pressure in our vicinity."

At present, a spell of wet and windy weather with persistent rain and heavy showers is expected.
