Met Eireann confirm areas where snow will hit in the coming hours

Met Eireann has confirmed exactly where snow is set to fall over the next few hours in Ireland.

The West bore the brunt of the winter weather overnight, with the East managing to escape a layer of snow.

However, this evening the Irish forecaster has confirmed that an area of rain and sleet will turn to snow across the midlands, North and East of the country.

A status yellow weather warning has been put in place for Connacht, Leinster, Cavan, Monaghan, and Donegal, effective from 2 am tonight ahead of snow showers.

The forecaster has said to expect accumulations of up to 5cm, mainly on higher ground, with strong southeast winds expected too.

The warning is valid until midday on Saturday, with further accumulations of snow expected to gather on Saturday morning, alongside some outbreaks of rain across the country.

Saturday afternoon will see another host of snow showers, although confined to northeast Ulster, meanwhile, snow gathered elsewhere will begin to thaw.

Persistent rain will then develop in Atlantic coastal counties in the afternoon with the highest temperatures between 1 and 4 degrees Celsius in the North and East.

Closing out the weekend, Sunday looks set to be a wet and windy day with consistent heavy rain and gale-force winds, with expected localised flooding.

Temperatures will begin to rise to between 10 and 13 degrees with rain then clearing northeastwards by the evening while the showers will reduce to scattered outbreaks.

Next week looks set to start off quite mild, with no signs of incoming snow at the moment.

Expect patchy rain during Monday morning, but there will be some dry and sunny weather with temperatures remaining above 10 degrees.

Once this weekend’s snow clears, the forecaster has predicted generally milder weather than average for mid-February.
