Men armed with hammers caught on CCTV attacking cash-in-transit driver and stealing money

Two men with hammers attacked a cash-in-transit driver before stealing the money he was carrying and making their escape.

Greater Manchester Police released CCTV footage of the robbery, which occurred outside Home Bargains in Clayton on Monday 3 December.

Footage shows the driver returning to his delivery vehicle when two men charge at him and hit him over the head with a claw hammer and lump hammer.

They managed to steal a box carrying cash from him and escaped in a grey Audi A3 towards Ashton.

The driver was wearing protective clothing and escaped unharmed.

“This was a shocking and brazen attack on a man in broad daylight," said Detective Constable Jamie Heaton, of GMP’s City of Manchester Division.

“Had he not been wearing safety clothing and a helmet, the consequences could have been much more severe.

“Thankfully, the man was uninjured, but the psychological impact of crimes such as this should not be underestimated.

“Do you recognise the attackers in this footage or have any information that can assist our enquiries?

“Perhaps you saw a car matching the description in the vicinity shortly before or after the incident.

“Even the smallest piece of information can often help police solve crimes like this.

“If you know something – please get in touch immediately.”

Information can be left with police on 0161 856 3243 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111
