Since 1964 Brands Hatch had shared the British GP with Silverstone but due to Fisa (the international motor sports governing body) instituting a policy of long-term contracts for one circuit per Grand Prix, this shared hosting had to come to an end. As Brands Hatch was perceived as a poorer facility, it was Silverstone that got the nod.
