Melbourne woman assaulted on morning walk

Victoria Police believe it was a targeted attack and the man's behaviour is extremely concerning. (AAP)

A Melbourne woman who was sexually assaulted by a stranger while on a morning walk has spoken out, saying she fears he will attack again.

The 30-year-old woman, known as Sarah, on Thursday said she was walking down Sydney Road in Brunswick to meet a friend for their Sunday morning exercise routine when she noticed the man about 6.20am on February 7.

He was wearing a mask and a hoodie but never said anything before or after sexually assaulting her, she said.

The woman yelled at him before he fled down a side street, but she is worried he may strike again.

"It feels calculated and deliberate," Sarah told reporters.

"To me it's either already happened to someone else, or it will at some point. And I'm not OK with that."

Sarah and her friend have since abandoned their Sunday morning walks.

Detective Senior Constable Diane Jeffries said the Caucasian man, described as being in his late-20s or early-30s, followed Sarah for about one kilometre before sexually assaulting her in public.

She said police believe it was a targeted attack and the man had attempted to conceal himself by wearing a mask outside when it no was longer compulsory for public health reasons.

"This type of behaviour is extremely concerning," Det Sen Const Jeffries said.

"It's a brazen attack in a busy street in Melbourne ... and it will not be tolerated.

"We're hoping to bring this person before the courts as soon as we can."
