Mel B Opens Up About Co-Parenting With Eddie Murphy After Years of Tension

Mel B has opened up about how things with her ex, Eddie Murphy, have taken a turn for the better after years of difficulties navigating co-parenting their daughter, Angel. The Spice Girls star, now 49, shares 18-year-old Angel with the US comedy legend, and while their relationship didn’t exactly start smoothly, it seems they’ve finally found a balance.

Speaking to US Weekly, Mel revealed that moving back to her hometown of Leeds and settling down with her fiancé, Rory McPhee, has given her space to heal and build a healthier dynamic with Eddie. She reflected on how her past trauma and PTSD, particularly following her relationship with ex-husband Stephen Belafonte, had made that co-parenting journey more complicated.

“I think being in the kind of [situation] that I was in, it was hard for me to step out and have that relationship [with Eddie] flourish. I managed to do it bit by bit,” she said.

Mel now lives on a 15-acre farmhouse in Leeds, while Eddie remains in his Beverly Hills mansion. Despite the distance, their co-parenting efforts have started to click. “Angel is coming over [to Murphy’s house]. They spend time together. They go on holiday together. He has [10] kids and he’s a proper father,” she shared.

Eddie, now 64, keeps a fairly low profile but shares an interest in art and Japanese culture — something he and Angel have bonded over. “[Angel] speaks fluent Japanese and he knows exactly what he wants to do and where he wants to go,” Mel added, speaking with pride.

She recently celebrated Angel’s 18th birthday with a heartfelt Instagram post: “You are so special and so bright and so talented!! I couldn’t be prouder of watching you grow and become the person you are but you’ll forever be my babyyyy.”

Mel and Eddie’s history goes back to 2006, when they briefly dated before welcoming Angel the following year. At the time, their relationship was rocky, with Eddie even publicly questioning Angel’s paternity. But years later, Mel described him as “the love of my life” in her 2018 memoir Brutally Honest, calling him “a genuinely decent man.”

Meanwhile, Mel’s eldest daughter Phoenix, has also stepped into the spotlight, recently appearing in Channel 4’s Born in the Limelight – Nepo Babies: UNTOLD. Speaking about the pressures of growing up with famous parents, she admitted: “I do get why people don’t like me… I feel like that was the point of the documentary.”

Now, with family life feeling more grounded, Mel is enjoying a new chapter – and a much-improved bond with the father of one of her children.
