It turns out that Meghan Markle keeps making enemies with her ‘Duchess Difficult’ attitude. Markle apparently had a major disagreement with Edward Enninful, who was the editor-in-chief of British Vogue in 2022. The conflict began because of Markle’s supposed requests for an unusual level of control over a potential September 2022 Vogue cover.
The original plan involved a large feature in British Vogue centered around Markle’s keynote speech at the One Young World Summit in Manchester. This partnership was supposed to include extensive coverage in both the print and digital versions of the magazine. However, the collaboration quickly grew into something much bigger than just a feature.
According to The Mirror, Markle wanted not just a leading spot in the British edition but also a cover appearance in both the UK and US Vogue issues at the same time. This ambitious goal required a degree of control over the creative process that insiders said was unheard of. “Meghan asked for control over [the] photographer, writer, final edit, photos, cover lines, and wanted a global issue. Nobody gets that. Not even Beyoncé.”
Meghan Markle asked for too much when working with Vogue
This bold request immediately created tension between Markle and Enninful. The British Vogue editor had already booked supermodel Linda Evangelista for the September 2022 cover. Unwilling to change his creative vision or go back on his commitment to Evangelista, Enninful reportedly stood his ground and refused to give in to Markle’s demands. This rejection led Markle to reportedly back out of the planned feature entirely, causing a serious rift between the two.
Making the situation even more complicated, Markle reportedly tried to go around Enninful by reaching out to Anna Wintour, the editor-in-chief of US Vogue. She set up a Zoom call with Wintour, hoping to convince her to reconsider and support her vision. However, this attempt also failed. Wintour, who had already chosen Serena Williams, one of Markle’s close friends, as the cover star for the US edition’s September issue, politely turned down Markle’s proposal.

The fallout from these events had serious consequences. The partnership between Markle and Enninful fell apart completely. Their previously friendly relationship, which reportedly began with their successful collaboration on British Vogue’s 2019 Forces for Change issue, was permanently damaged.
We’ve seen Meghan Markle’s supposed greed questioned before, but this may be why William reportedly William “loathes” Markle. The situation also caused a lot of frustration within Condé Nast. Sources said Enninful was angry about losing the potential feature, and senior figures at the publishing company shared this frustration. While some reports say the two still exchange birthday wishes and flowers, suggesting a surface-level polite relationship remains, it is clear their professional connection was ruined beyond repair.
