Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announce exciting new project on wedding anniversary

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have used their third wedding anniversary to launch their latest charity project - building a community centre in India.

The couple tied the knot on May 19, 2018, in Windsor, and while they haven't had the easiest start to married life and eventually quit their royal roles, they are now settled in the US and focused on the charity work they are passionate about.

They set up Archewell as an umbrella organisation for their post-royal work, including their multi-million dollar podcast and Netflix deals.

On their anniversary, the couple shared details of their plans to build a Community Relief Centre in Mumbai in partnership with World Central Kitchen.

The area is facing a huge spike in Covid-19 cases, with 4,329 deaths reported in the past 24 hours.

A statement on the Archewell website states: "As part of our ongoing philanthropic partnership, Archewell Foundation and World Central Kitchen are announcing plans today to build our next Community Relief Center in India, which is facing a devastating second wave of COVID-19.

"Right now, COVID-19 cases are spiking across the entire country of India. On Tuesday, India’s total virus cases exceeded 25 million, with 260,000 new cases and 4,329 deaths reported in the past 24 hours. Hundreds of thousands of lives have been lost, millions have been infected, and there is widespread concern that the crisis is even worse than reported.

"In support of India, Archewell Foundation and World Central Kitchen are focusing on the long-term needs of local communities. "

The centre is the third the couple has set up with the World Central Kitchen.

It will provide "relief, resilience, healing and strength" to people in the community. They can be used as emergency response kitchens, distribution hubs, schools or a vaccine centre depending on the need.

Last week Meghan and Harry used their Archewell website to announce that their fundraising appeal for Archie's birthday raised $3 million for Covid vaccines.

The couple shared a new photo of Archie on his birthday (The Duke and Duchess of Sussex)

In a thank you letter they wrote: "On May 6th, we shared our call to action with you, to help communities, families, and individuals around the world who are not being given fair and equitable access to the COVID-19 vaccine.

"As campaign chairs of Vax Live, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex invited supporters to do their part to create vaccine equity, including calling on anyone who was able to make a small donation to support this effort.

"Every dollar that you generously contributed was matched dollar-for-dollar by organizations like Seadream Family Foundation and Mastercard Impact Fund to bring the total of funding for this cause to over $3 million!

"Congratulations and thank you for helping to make the world a more compassionate and equitable place. We are proud to have you as part of the Archewell community.

"As evidenced through this activation, our shared purpose can yield extraordinary results. Look at what happens when we come together for the greater good!

"Well done, to each of every one of you, and thank you from The Duke and Duchess of Sussex and all of us at Archewell."
