Megaship that blocked Suez Canal arrives in UK four months late

A gigantic container ship that blocked the Suez Canal for six days, sparking disruption to shipping services worldwide, has arrived in the UK at last – four months later than planned.

The Panama-flagged Ever Given – the size of a skyscraper – docked at Felixstowe port yesterday, watched from the coastline by scores of awaiting spectators.

The vessel should have arrive in the Suffolk port in early April, but its schedule was derailed a month earlier when it became stuck in Egypt's Suez Canal.

The blockage brought international shipping to a standstill and is estimated to have prevented £6.8 million worth of cargo a day from passing between Asia and Europe.

The Ever Given arrived in Rotterdam, Netherlands, last Thursday with 18,300 containers on board, before departing for the UK.

The next stop for the 400-metre vessel after Felixstowe is Dunkirk, France, where engineers will check whether any repairs are needed.
