10-year-old Cassandra Lin was asking local restaurant owners what happened to the used cooking oil left behind in their kitchens at an age when most children were thinking about homework and playground games. The answer surprised her: much of the grease was simply discarded, even though it could be recycled into biodiesel and BioHeat, a cleaner-burning fuel used to heat homes. In 2008, the Rhode Island student decided to do something about it. She began visiting restaurants, started collecting used cooking oil and encouraged local businesses to donate what had previously been treated as waste. It started as a fourth-grade environmental project and soon grew into a statewide community initiative that combined recycling with practical help for families that are struggling to pay heating bills. According to EarthEcho International , Cassandra founded TGIF (Turn Grease Into Fuel) with the goal of transforming waste cooking oil into heating fuel while educating communities about renewable energy and environmental responsibility.

From one school project to a statewide effort
The project expanded beyond Cassandra's hometown as more restaurants agreed to participate. Volunteers collected used cooking oil from local businesses, which was then processed into BioHeat: a blend containing biodiesel that can be used in conventional home heating systems. Schools, community groups and local organizations joined these collection drives, and helped spread awareness about recycling waste oil while supporting families facing high winter heating costs. Huffpost states that Cassandra also launched educational campaigns to encourage students to think differently about everyday waste and showed that environmental projects could produce practical benefits for communities rather than simply reducing landfill disposal. The initiative attracted national attention, which led to speaking invitations, environmental awards and recognition from organizations promoting youth leadership and sustainability.
