Media remembers statistics guru BG Joshi at Hockey World Cup in Odisha

ROURKELA: In a sport where getting authentic statistics has always been a challenge, numbers man BG Joshi's contribution and unmatched passion was remembered at the Men's Hockey World Cup on Friday.

Joshi ji, as he was fondly called, died of Covid-related complications on 20th April 2021 at the age of 67 in his hometown Sehore, Madhya Pradesh.

The travelling and local media in Rourkela gathered and observed a one-minute silence inside the media lounge of the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium, while offering their condolences ahead of India's opening match of the tournament against Spain.

An image of BG Joshi and a jersey with his name was displayed in the press box as a mark of tribute.

Starting his passion for maintaining hockey statistics as a fan of the sport in 1990, BG Joshi had numbers for every stat right from the first international match.

He, thus, became a favourite among the journalists and the go-to man for hockey numbers world over.

He covered India at every event except at the Olympics, which he wanted to attend once before putting his pen down.
