Meath GAA legend Graham Geraghty feels “very lucky” to be alive following brain bleed

Meath great Graham Geraghty counts himself “very lucky” to have made a full recovery from a life threatening brain bleed.

The current Meath under-20 selector experienced a ‘horrific pain’ in his head at work last October and was rushed to hospital.

He underwent a seven-and-a-half hour ‘coiling’ operation soon after at Beaumont Hospital and spent several weeks recovering alone due to Covid regulations.

Geraghty told BBC Sounds’ The GAA Social podcast that he feared for his life and said the pain during his post-op recovery was initially unbearable.

The 1999 All-Ireland winning captain said: “The first week was horrific. On a scale of one to 10, the pain was probably about 15. I couldn’t stick the pain really. I was on a lot of mediation and pain killers.

“There’d be a lot of things going through your mind, ‘Are you going to see your family again, friends?’ It kind of brings everything home really.”

A two-time All-Ireland winner in 1996 and 1999, the former International Rules star said he’s so grateful to have made a full recovery. Geraghty added: “I’m generally good. I get very tired, a couple of naps a day, I still have to. If I do anything I feel quite faint or get dizzy.

“Then that goes again when I sit down or rest. I’d take that any day. I could have been paralysed, loss of limbs, speech or anything like that. I count myself very lucky that I have no real side effects.”
