McDonald's price hike sees popular items increase for first time in 14 years

Popular fast food restaurant McDonalds has announced a price increase on a majority of its products - raising the value of one item for the first time in 14 years.

Due to growing cost pressures, the corporation announced that their UK restaurants would be adding between 10 and 20 pence to a number of items, the BBC confirmed. This means that the price of a cheeseburger has increased for the first time in 14 years, from 99 pence to £1.19.

In an email to their customers, chief executive for McDonalds UK and Ireland, Alistair Macrow has stated that the company has faced "tough choices" when it comes to pricing.

In the statement, Alistair said: "We understand that any price increases are not good news, but we have delayed and minimised these changes for as long as we could."

Some prices may stay the same at certain restaurants, due to some being operated by franchisees, who can set their own prices based on recommendations from the company.

According to the rising cost of living and inflation, if a cheeseburger had risen in price in accordance with these changes, it would cost £1.42 right now.

Other items that will see a change in price include: upgrading from medium to large meals, McNugget share boxes, breakfast deals and large coffees.

McDonald's has more than 36,000 restaurants in more than 100 countries. Check your local McDonalds here for a full price list.
