McDonald's explains when it's bringing back popular breakfast menu

McDonald's has finally spoken out on plans to bring back its full menu after scrapping breakfast and dozens more popular items last month.

The chain's boss said breakfast could return "within a few weeks" if the latest trial of reopenings goes to plan.

It comes after thousands of people flocked to restaurants across the UK last week, with one branch forced to close due to huge demand.

McDonald's has now reopened 923 more branches, allowing members to pick up orders via drive-thrus, Just Eat and Uber Eats.

The chain began reopening its restaurants for deliveries and drive-thrus on May 20 after temporarily closing all 1,350 restaurants on March 23 due to coronavirus lockdown.

Its seating areas remain closed - but customers are allowed to visit some branches to collect takeaway orders.

Those who do so are being urged to order via the app ahead of their visit, while a £25 cap has been placed on all orders per vehicle.

Newly reopened branches are also operating shorter opening hours of 11am to 10pm.

Paul Pomroy, chief executive of McDonald’s UK and Ireland, said: "We are working hard behind the scenes to open for longer and offer more services.

"I hope that within a few weeks we will be able to start trialling breakfast service."

But he warned new menu items will only be introduced once it's safe to do so.

"Please continue to bear with us. Employee safety remains my top priority and we will only move forward with new services and menu items when we’re confident we can do so whilst still enabling a safe working environment," Mr Pomroy added.

The announcement comes as McDonald's plans to relaunch its "McDelivery" service at 500 restaurants from next week. Until now, it's been using Just Eat and Uber Eats to fulfil home delivery orders.

There are now 923 McDonald's branches open across the UK and Ireland - see a full list of those that have reopened, here.
