Matty Longstaff to Aberdeen transfer latest as Newcastle set key demand for talented midfielder

Aberdeen are closing in on a loan deal for Newcastle 's Matty Longstaff.

Dons manager Stephen Glass is hoping to sign the midfielder from his former club.

The 21-year-old has been linked with Sheffield United, Huddersfield and Blackburn but looks set for Pittodrie.

Glass, who also wants to add a defender, has brought in strikers Austin Samuels and Marley Watkins this week. He watched his side crash out of Europe in the wake of a comprehensive defeat to Qarabag.

The Aberdeen manager confirmed: "Anyone we add will be coming to make the group stronger.

"We’re looking to add. By the end of the week we should be able to finalise things."

Newcastle want Longstaff to play more first-team football - something Steve Bruce made abundantly clear earlier in the week.

He said: “It’s (a loan) something that we’ve decided might be best for Matty. I’ve had that conversation with him.

“We’ll see in the next week, but we’ve had one or two inquiries. We’re hoping something will happen with him in the next couple of days.”
