Matty Longstaff speaks about his Newcastle United future as contract heads into final months

Matty Longstaff says he wants to sign a new contract for Newcastle United – as his deal heads into the final few months.

The 19-year-old made international headlines with his superb Gallowgate debut goal, which paved the way for a crucial three points for Newcastle against Manchester United on Sunday.

And in the celebrations that followed, there was the sober reminder and will be free to negotiate with overseas clubs from January.

Scouts from across the Premier League are monitoring both Longstaff brothers, with Manchester United’s pursuit of Sean coming after Red Devils coach Michael Carrick personally recommended him. But both seem happy at Newcastle, where Steve Bruce has told them they are central to his future plans.

His representatives are currently in negotiations with Newcastle over a contract extension and his addition to the first team squad will obviously leave him in a stronger position but all parties are fairly relaxed about the situation with the player and club both keen for him to stay.

“Yeah, obviously I want to stay at Newcastle but the biggest thing for me is just to carry on playing well and that will take care of itself,” Longstaff told ChronicleLive.

Longstaff was originally due to go out on loan to League Two clubs, with Bradford City keen to offer him first team football.

But after impressing in pre-season, Steve Bruce decided to keep him at St James’ Park and he now looks set to reprise his midfield partnership with brother Sean at Chelsea as the pair’s meteoric rise continues.
