Matty Longstaff's dad David misses Whitley Warriors game to see son's magic moment

Matty Longstaff's dad sat out of Whitley Warriors' big ice hockey clash with Billingham Stars because he did not want to miss his teenage son's big moment.

David Longstaff, who has played for Great Britain, Newcastle Vipers and Sheffield Steelers to name just some of the clubs on his CV, did take his seat in the Milburn Stand and was spotted on TV.

The Whitley player/coach was in the stands at St James' Park while his own side ran out 8-3 winners.

But he was present to see Longstaff score the winner at the Gallowgate End on his Premier League debut.

Speaking after the match, Longstaff junior, speaking to NUFC TV said: "He was humming and harring but he would never have forgave himself if he'd have missed it.

"I said how many chances would he get to see me make my debut with my brother.

"He kinda of agreed with it - especially now, he didn't miss out.

"It was a massive boost to get the points for the players and fans."

Meanwhile, Steve Bruce said after the game: "Thankfully we responded and for a young kid to make his debut and blast one in from 20 yards is something else.

"Since pre-season in China I've said 'who's this kid?'

"He stands out with his ginger hair. He has wonderful enthusiasm and he lights up your day.

"He's 19? So what.

"I'm delighted for him."
