Matt McQuaid talks pro aspirations, advice from Izzo at Pistons tryout

Matt McQuaid, who recently attended the Pro Basketball Combine, has big dreams to play in the NBA. McQuaid isn’t projected to be drafted at this time, but with a great three-point shot, an All-Big Ten defensive resumé, and solid ball-handling skills, he might just get there as a free agent or through the G League. McQuaid attended a pre-draft workout with the Detroit Pistons yesterday, and he had some interesting comments on his pro basketball hopes and the advice he received from Tom Izzo.

McQuaid said Izzo told him this before the draft process:

“Just take it day by day. You’re not going to get drafted or picked up like that. It takes time, it’s a long process. You just got to put in the work and trust yourself.”

McQuaid also commented on his NBA dreams:

“Ever since I was a little kid it’s always been my dream to play in the NBA. That’s why I went to Michigan State, because I thought it was the best opportunity to put me in that position, under Coach Izzo. I’m just going to try my best to do that.”

McQuaid has now worked out for the Pistons, the Memphis Grizzlies, and he will work out for former Michigan coach John Beilein and his new Cavaliers team on June 14.
