Matt Hancock to give live update on coronavirus on Thursday

Health Secretary Matt Hancock will lead a Downing Street press conference on Thursday afternoon.

NHS England’s Professor Stephen Powis and England’s chief medical officer Professor Chris Whitty will join Mr Hancock.

The briefing live from Downing Street is expected at 5pm.

It comes in the week the NHS rolled out the first coronavirus vaccine, and after Mr Hancock announced in Parliament that millions more doses are on the way.

Mr Hancock is expected to announce which parts of the country will be next to get the vaccine.

So far 70 hospital hubs have been given doses of the vaccine, and Mr Hancock said earlier this week that more locations will get the vaccine next week.

That will include hospital hubs and GP surgeries.

Care homes are expected to get the vaccine before Christmas, with wider community vaccination in the New Year.

Next week will also see the first time the new tiers in England have been reviewed.

Mr Hancock will announce at some point what tier each area will be in for Christmas.
