French artist Mathieu Briand has spent the past seven years living most artist’s fantasy: making art on near-deserted islands. Since his project started in 2008, Et In Libertalia Ego (which takes its name from the 18th-century book by Captain Charles Johnson) has explored a number of isolated island communities.
Briand began on an island off the coast of Madagascar where he sought a safe haven for contemporary art, away from the art world. As per Johnson’s book, he hoped to bring together like-minded artists, writers and dancers.
The latest iteration of his exhibition at Mona includes his works from Pitcairn Island. Curated by Nicole Durling and Olivier Varenne, the exhibition will feature videos, paintings, objects and sculptures, along with remnants of an island life.
