Maternity nurse's advice on how to keep babies cool while sleeping in heatwave

A maternity nurse has offered her expert advice on the best conditions for babies to sleep in during the summer heatwave.

Sleep consultant Abi Thompson said it was important to be regularly checking infants for signs of overheating by touching the back of their neck - especially as they can't express if they're too hot or cold.

The mum-of-three also recommended installing a thermometer in the baby's bedroom to keep an eye on the temperature.

She said it was a good idea to check it throughout the night.

Abi also said parents should open the windows and partially close the blinds a few hours before bedtime - so there is a flow of air without the direct sunlight.

And she said if it reaches 27C, a nappy is all a baby needs to be wearing.

Between 24C and 27C a short sleeved vest and a 0.5tog sleeping bag was recommended.

Abi told The Sun : "Babies can't manage their temperatures as well as an adult can.

"Nor can they let us know if they are too hot or too cold, so we need to follow their symptoms and dress them correctly to avoid dehydration.

"All babies are different. You should be regularly checking them for overheating by touching the back of their neck, not checking hands or feet, which are always cooler."

The managing director of Baby Sound Asleep also advised people to get a fan to keep the air circulating around the room.

She said a cooler bath than usual was a good idea and of course increasing the fluid intake.

This could either be breast milk, formula or water depending on the age of the baby and what is suitable for them to drink.
