It’s extremely rare that MasterChef Australia cops a controversial moment. So, to stir up some drama amongst all the foodie wholesomeness, MasterChef Australia: Back To Win judges (and divas of my life) Poh Ling Yeow and Sofia Levin have spilled on their most controversial food opinions as well as their thoughts on viral food trends, like the inescapable Dubai Chocolate.
When it comes to being a judge for a beloved, televised food competition, you would think that the folks up for the role would be all about the food — no ifs or buts.
After all, the judges are sacrificing their taste buds (and digestive systems) in the name of MasterChef Australia and reality TV, right?
Well, in a cheeky tea spill to PEDESTRIAN.TV, MasterChef Australia: Back To Win co-judges and besties Poh and Sofia have revealed their most candid controversial food opinions, and honestly, as someone who can be picky despite the vast foodie options in Sydney, I totally agree with what they’re saying.
First to spill the beans on their controversial food opinion was MasterChef-Australia-runner-up-turned-judge Poh, who admitted that while she loves chocolate, she dislikes chocolate-flavoured desserts.
“I love eating chocolate but generally don’t like chocolate-flavoured desserts unless it’s paired with hazelnut,” Poh dropped before revealing that she “likes [her] steaks medium”.
“Dear god, I said it!” she added.

In a more brutally honest confession, Sofia slammed the good ol’ Aussie breakfast, labelling it as “boring”.
“Give me Sri Lankan hoppers, Ethiopian ful or Japanese okonomiyaki over smashed avocado any day of the week,” she shared.
Honestly, now I think of it, I don’t think I can put my finger on what counts as an Aussie brekkie. Is that like cereal? A fry-up? Banana bread?
I think I’ll need these foodie divas to come up with what comes in an Aussie breakfast…

Poh Ling-Yeow and Sofia Levin’s true opinions on viral food trends
Alongside her controversial food opinion, Poh also revealed she found viral food trends “annoying”. However, she believes that the infamous Dubai Chocolate is the real deal.
“I find food trends annoying because it’s usually about the gimmick of performing the recipe rather than the flavour, but the Dubai chocolate one is legit,” the season one fan fave dished.
“It’s simple for me – if it really works and tastes great then it’s a good idea.”
As for Sofia, the food journo admitted that she could see the pros and cons of these viral food trends, but ultimately highlighted that these popular dishes are popularised “at the expense of diversity”.
“There’s an argument that viral trends encourage people to try new foods, but a large majority of them put superficial creations on a pedestal at the expense of diversity,” Sofia shared.
“Currently it’s Dubai Chocolate, fifteen years ago it was the ‘Freakshake’, later this year it will be something else.”

Furthermore, Sofia noted that these quick trends also contribute to food waste, pointing out that consumers could be only buying the dish to partake in the trend for social media likes, only to bin it in the end.
“For hospitality businesses, trends can be a quick way to get customers in the door, but viral food trends are like diets: a short-term solution,” Sofia adds.
“As a journalist, trends are of interest to me but not my focus. It’s my job to share lesser-known stories and leave the trends to the marketers creating them and the TikTokers consuming them.”
OOOFT. And that’s how you know they stand on business when it comes to food.
MasterChef Australia airs from Sundays to Wednesdays on Channel 10 and 10Play.
