Three people have been killed and another nine injured in a mass shooting at a Halloween party in California as police hunt at least one gunman who is on the run.

Firefighters treated the victims in front of a house in Long Beach where up to 20 shots were fired, reports the Mirror .

Shocking aerial footage shows the horrific in the garden following the bloodbath.

The other nine victims were taken to hospital as the Los Angeles suburb's emergency services declared a mass-casualty incident.

Neighbours told local media that the house was hosting a Halloween party when shots rang out at around 10.45pm local time on Tuesday.

The gunman was still at large, according to the Long Beach Fire Department.

Neighbours told a Los Angeles Times reporter they heard up to 20 gunshots, followed by eerie silence before sirens.

A local resident, who only gave his name as Martin, told the Long Beach Post he was walking to a liquor store when he heard a car swerving and accelerating.

He added: “Then all I hear is pop, pop, pop, a bunch of pops – maybe like 20 shots. It was a lot."

The Long Beach Fire Department said three men were dead and nine people were taken to local hospitals.

Firefighter-paramedics set up a triage in the front garden alongside a neighbouring nail salon.

Long Beach Police have not yet said if more than one gunman was involved.

The force urged people to stay away from the area.

Fire spokesman Jake Heflin told the Los Angeles Times at the scene: "Upon arriving the engine company and the paramedic unit identified a scene obviously full of chaos.

"There were 12 patients that were involved in this incident.

Three confirmed fatalities, adult males.

"A total of nine patients were transported to local area hospitals."
