Mason Mount gives his verdict on being awarded Manchester United No.7 shirt

New Manchester United recruit Mason Mount says he understands the responsibility that comes with wearing the No.7 shirt following his move to Old Trafford.

United unveiled Mount as their first signing of the summer transfer window on Wednesday, confirming that he had put pen to paper on an initial five-year deal. The England international had spent Monday and Tuesday at the club's Carrington training base putting the finishing touches to the move after the Reds reached a £60million agreement with Chelsea last week.

Manager Erik ten Hag had identified Mount as his primary midfield target several weeks ago, meaning he will be delighted to have landed his No.1 target for that area of the team. He is widely expected to slot into the Dutchman's preferred three-man midfield in place of Christian Eriksen.

Just an hour after United had announced Mount's arrival at Old Trafford on Wednesday morning, they confirmed that he had been awarded the iconic No.7 shirt. It was initially thought that the number was going to be awarded to Alejandro Garnacho ahead of the forthcoming season.

The No.7 shirt, which was last worn by Cristiano Ronaldo prior to his departure last November, has been worn by several household names in the past, including the likes of David Beckham, Eric Cantona and George Best. Having been donned by such famous names, there is an expectation that comes with wearing it, something Mount is fully aware of.

Taking to his Instagram page, Mount said: "I know the history and understand the responsibility that comes with this shirt.

"The most important thing for me is to gain your trust and I will work hard to do that. I won't let you down, Reds!"

Mount, who adds no shortage of experience to Ten Hag's squad, could make his first outing in United colours as soon as Wednesday when the Reds travel to Oslo to face Leeds United in their pre-season opener.

Reflecting on his move to United, Mount told MUTV: "Several months ago, it became clear that I wasn't in Chelsea's plans moving forward. Once I knew that United were involved, my decision was made up.

"A massive club, huge iconic players have played here, and I wanted to be a part of that from the beginning. Getting in early and ready for pre-season to start was a main objective of mine as well."
