Masks could return to school as part of Covid-19 contingency plan, says government

Masks could be reintroduced to schools, the government has confirmed.

Education Secretary, Nadhim Zahawi, has warned that masks could return to school as part of the government's Covid-19 contingency plan, but said there will not be a return of group bubbles, Wales Online report.

The bubble system saw children grouped in certain categories in a bid to prevent infection, with entire bubbles being sent home if someone tested positive for Covid.

Nadhim Zahawi told Sky News: “So, the good news is that – and thanks to the brilliant teachers and support staff and parents and children – 99% of schools are open.

“Attendance has gone up, the last set of figures I looked at was about 90%, that obviously will fluctuate depending on infection rates.

“But my priority is to protect education, keep those schools open.”

He added that he had contingency plans, including the wearing of masks, but said: “I don’t want to return to bubbles because actually, you saw the fall off in attendance which really does harm mental wellbeing, mental health of children.
