Mary Anderson has raised £1000 for Mary’s Meals by knitting bobble hats

A West Lothian woman has raised £1000 for Mary’s Meals by knitting bobble hats.

Mary Anderson, from Livingston, knitted a staggering 200 hats and sold them for £5 each to help children living in poverty overseas.

Mary said “I have always enjoyed knitting, and I’d done a few Harry Potter coloured hats for my grandchildren. They were a total hit, so I had an idea about raising some money for Mary’s Meals.”

The bobble hats were sold to friends and family, and Mary was given permission to sell them after Mass at St Andrew’s Church in Livingston.

The grandmother of eight knitted non-stop for months, often completing three hats a day. Every week she set up her stall after Mass and even got special requests for colours, styles and sizes such as babies’ hats.

She continued “I never set out to raise £1000 but the hats sold so well I ended up with an order list. I could hardly knit fast enough. That’s when I thought to myself, I wonder whether I could reach a grand?

“I’m really proud of what I’ve achieved and I’m grateful to all the parishioners of St Andrew’s and all the others who bought the hats. It’s a wonderful feeling to be handing over this amazing sum of money to Mary’s Meals, and it makes all the hard work worthwhile.”

Mary’s Meals provides life-changing meals to some of the world’s poorest school children every day. For more information: https://www.marysmeals.org.uk/
