Marvel’s Wolverine gets M rating for cussing and dismembering, but someone will show their buttcheeks, too

If it wasn’t evident enough in multiple trailers, Marvel’s Wolverine is going to be a bloody, gory affair, true to the character’s most animalistic traits.

The Entertainment Software Rating Board description for Marvel’s Wolverine reveals some info about the title set to launch on PS5 next month, including some disturbing details about just how violent Wolverine is going to get in his adventure. And thank goodness.

“From a third-person perspective, players use melee attacks and special skills to kill enemy soldiers and robots in frenetic combat,” ESRB’s description reads. “Players use their claws to slash, stab, and slice enemies; rage modes allow players to enact faster, more destructive combos and slow-motion finishers (e.g., dramatically stabbing an enemy in the head).”

Wolverine is a very violent character. I think that having a T rating like Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man games would have been a massive injustice to the character, so I’d liken the jump in violence to something like the original X-Men movies to the R-rated and excellent Logan.

The rating goes on to say that combat “is highlighted by frequent blood-splatter effects, screams of pain, and dismemberment/decapitation,” and that “battlefields are sometimes strewn with torsos and limbs; cutscenes can also depict blood and gore (e.g., characters tearing enemies apart, decapitating enemy soldiers).” Hell yeah.

Wolverine is also a bit of a potty mouth at times, so I’m happy to report that “the words ‘fuck’ and ‘shit’ appear in the game” as well. Funnily enough, though, the rating also teases “a handful” of sequences that “briefly depict a character’s exposed buttocks.” Who’s going cheeks out in Marvel’s Wolverine? Place your bets now. I think it could be Logan himself if we get any scenes of his Weapon X transformation, personally.

Marvel’s Wolverine was already one of my most anticipated games of the year, but now that we know for sure it will be a violently gory affair (and also have some ass and foul language in it), I’m even more excited for the Sept. 15 release.
