Marvel star's new Netflix comedy brings back memories of Blockbuster stores

Who can forget the excitement of rocking up to a Blockbuster store on a Saturday afternoon to pick a movie to watch over the weekend?

Shelf upon shelf offered up all sorts of tantalising tales - from rom-coms such as Sleepless In Seattle or There's Something About Mary, through to action/adventures like Terminator 2 or The Matrix.

There were also animated classics in Finding Nemo or Toy Story, or maybe you preferred horrors such as Halloween or Friday the 13th?

All these visual and tangible treats made it hard to make a decision, something that today's audiences can only relate to when it comes to choose what to stream.

It wasn't actually that long ago that the famous video rental chain stores were a staple in most towns across the country.

But they're all gone now, save for one last, lonely outpost in Oregon, USA.

And it's here that Netflix has set its new workplace comedy, 'Blockbuster'.

The ten-episode series follows the hilarious trials and tribulations of video store staff, including film-loving manager Timmy Yoon (Randall Park).

When he discovers the store's days are numbered, he and his colleagues pull out all the stops to unite their community together in a battle to keep the premises open.

Added to the mix is the return of Park's former employee – and long-time secret crush – Eliza (Melissa Fumero) who has just separated from her husband. Potential romance alert!

Other notable stars making up the cast include American Vandal's Tyler Alvarez, To All the Boys' Madeleine Arthur, Star Falls' Kamaia Fairburn, In the Heights' Olga Merediz, and Curb Your Enthusiasm's JB Smoove.

You may recognise Park from his role as Jimmy Woo in Marvel's mind-bending TV series Wandavision, reprising his role from Ant-Man and the Wasp. He is also down to appear in the third film, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

Fumero played Amy Santiago in police comedy sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine from 2013 to 2021.

*Blockbuster will be streaming on Netflix from November 3
