MARVEL Cosmic Invasion is the latest game entrusted with the massive comic book IP, and my time with the retro beat 'em up demo has my hype at galactic levels.
I got access to the demo yesterday and have been playing it quite a bit ever since. It's limited in scope, with just two playable levels and boss fights, but there are nine heroes to choose from and they are all quite enjoyable to beat up bugs with.
The playable list in the demo includes Spider-Man, Wolverine, She-Hulk, Venom, Storm, Captain America, Phyla-Vell, Nova, and Rocket Raccoon. The premise is simple: a love letter to arcade beat 'em ups of the past, and it's from the same devs at Tribute Games who made the stellar Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge. Its quality is evident from the first time you start it up.
Using the vast array of heroes, you can play in co-op for up to four players across one level in the New York City streets and another on a S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier, fighting Annihilus's bug army and goons from Advanced Idea Mechanics. As a Marvel fan, it's a true joy.
I've played a bit with all of the heroes, but so far I think my favorite is Storm. She's able to juggle foes with lightning and wind attacks, fly in the air to combat bugs off the ground, and rain down thunderbolts with her special ability to clear the screen.
One of the unique parts of this game compared to others like it is that you can play as two heroes at once. Using the L1 button, you can tag them in for combo attacks like in Marvel vs. Capcom games, or swap out to use them full-time. Coming up with fun combos of heroes looks like it may be a good time in the full title.
The full game, due out some time this year, will launch on PC, Switch, PS5, PS4, and Xbox, and will have a total of 15 characters to choose from. The demo is now available on Steam for all players.
