Spider-Woman? Olivia Wilde hints 'secret' Marvel film is Spider-Man spin-off

Olivia Wilde has been hired to direct a secret Marvel film.

The actor and director of Booksmart will oversee the female-led project, whichwill be made in conjunction with Sony Pictures.

Wilde confirmed the news, originally reported by Variety, in a Twitter response to actorJosh Gad, who wrote: “The fact that @oliviawilde is directing an @MarvelStudios film is enough to get though one more day.”

Referencing Gad’s Frozen character Wilde replied: “It’s the least I could do in exchange for the gift of Olaf.”

Due to Sony’s involvement with the Spider-Man franchise and its spin-offs, includingVenom and the recently delayedMorbius, speculation is rife that Wilde will be making a Spider-Woman film.

Wilde herself seemed to corroborate these rumours by sharing a story of the news alongside a spider emoji.

She will reunite with writer Katie Silberman for the film. Their Golden Globe-nominated comedy Booksmart stars Kaitlyn Dever and Beanie Feldstein as two best friends who, on graduation night, realised they worked too hard throughout their academic life.

In May, it was reported that TV director SJ Clarkson would oversee a female-led Marvel film for Sony Pictures, with rumours suggesting it could be a Madame Web project.

Sony and Marvel have made no comment on either report.

Next up for Marvel will be Black Widow, which is set to be released in October having been delayed back in May. Following that will be The Eternals starring Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden and Kit Harington.

Sony’s Marvel films Venom 2 and Morbius – starring Tom Hardy and Jared Leto, respectively – will be unveiled in 2021.
