Martin explained the main cap is for those on standard tariffs paying by direct debit.

The current rate is £1042 per year for someone with typical usage.

But Martin predicted most customers will see a £70 to £90 rise in their bills.

The new cap will come into place on April 1 2021 and will last six months.

Meanwhile, thousands of customers have been left without a supplier after Green Network Energy and Simplicity Energy ceased trading.

Green Network Energy provided around 360,000 domestic customers with gas and electricity, while Simplicity Energy had around 50,000 customers.

But Martin explained customers should not rush to act, saying "You don't need to do anything yet.

"Your supplier will remain the same for now, and, in a few weeks, Ofgem, the energy regulator, will automatically move you to a new company with a replacement tariff."
