Martin Lewis' urgent warning to home workers who could lose free cash

Martin Lewis has warned anyone who has worked from home this year, that they could be about to lose cash they're entitled to from the government.

The Money Saving Expert issued the warning on his ITV Martin Lewis Money Show and told viewers that they would qualify for a tax allowance if they had been forced to work from home for even just one day, and could still claim for the whole year.

Martin told people watching that they could be owed £62 for the year, with higher tax payers entitled to more - reports Birmingham Live.

Speaking on the programme he said: "If you've had extra costs - for example extra heating or electricity costs - you are entitled to either £6 per week from your employer tax free, they don't have to give it you, they can and it's tax free is the point but most don't, or £6 tax relief, so £6 of your salary that isn't taxed.

"So if you're a 20% rate tax payer you save about £1.20 on that £6.

"If you want to claim more then you need proof on the direct bills.

"Now for this tax year, even if you've just worked at home one day and been required to work at home, you can get the whole year's tax relief by gov.uk micro service which just give it to you automatically. It's absolutely legit to do.

"It's worth £62 for the year for a basic rate tax payer, double that for a higher rate tax payer.

"You get it via a change in your tax code - if you do self assessment by the way you need to do it via your tax return."

And he warned viewers not to delay on claiming the free money.

Martin added : "Now don't delay on this, because I've been asking and they haven't confirmed, this micro service was just for this year, whether it will still be there after the 5th of April so it will be more difficult to claim afterwards."
